Afro-descendant communities in the north of the province of Esmeraldas confront serious conflicts of racism, displacement, violence, and extraction of natural resources, which is causing the loss of biodiversity and the impoverishment of the communities. Defying the environmental problems and lack of employment, the Association of Afro-Ecuadorian Women Timbiré in the Future (AMATIF) was founded in the Timbiré parish, which promotes ancestral traditions and healthy eating through the production of 100% natural fine aroma chocolate. In addition, they run a garden of medicinal and edible plants.
